How To Wind a Rolex Submariner (Properly)

It may seem like a straight forward job, and it is. However, if done incorrectly you could be left with damage. Read on to find out how to wind your Rolex Submariner...

Does a Rolex Submariner Wind Itself Automatically?

Yes, the Submariner along with all other current models produced by Rolex have self winding automatic movements. These generate power from the oscillation of an internal rotor from everyday movements while on your wrist. The Submariner 'Date' houses the 3235 movement with the 'Non-Date' version using the 3230 movement.

How To Keep It Wound When Not in Regular Use

The current Submariner model has a power reserve of approximately 70 hours which would allow the watch to stand for around two and a half days before stopping. If you have not worn your Submariner for a couple of days, just give it a wind and this will recharge the power reserve. Alternatively, for longer periods of time off the wrist, you may wish to consider an automatic watch winder.

How To Set the Time & Date

Winding positions of the Rolex Submariner Crown

Firstly, unscrew the winding crown counterclockwise. You will notice that it pops out a little once unscrewed. This is known as ‘Position 1’. In Position 1, the watch can be wound by rotating the crown clockwise. A minimum of 25 full turns would be enough to get the Submariner moving and start wearing. For a full wind, then 40 full turns should offer the maximum power reserve. Winding the crown anti-clockwise will have no effect.

To set the date, pull out the crown one notch to ‘Position 2’. Turn the crown clockwise until the correct date is displayed in the date window. Turning the crown in the other direction will have no effect.

To set the time, pull out the crown to the final notch. This is known as ‘Position 3’. From here you can turn the crown in either direction to set the time accurately. You will notice that the second hand has stopped in Position 3. This is to allow one to set the time accurately to the second.

Once you have set the date and the time it is of paramount importance that you screw the crown back into the case. Failure to do this will compromise the waterproofness of the watch and likely lead to costly repairs. Simply press the winding crown back into Position 1. Now apply a small amount of pressure into the case and turn the crown clockwise. The crown will stop turning once secure against the case.

Can You Wind It the Wrong Way?

Winding the watch anti-clockwise will have no effect on the charge of the watch. Always wind your Rolex clockwise.

How Often Should You Have It Serviced?

Rolex Movement Service

Rolex recommends a service at about every 10 years to keep things running well and offer a periodic inspection. Older models may need shorter intervals of perhaps 5 years. However, should you notice anything not operating as normal then it should be serviced immediately. This might include noise from the rotor or the hands not moving even once wound.

Can I use a watch winder with a Rolex Submariner?

If you don't wear your Rolex daily, then it may not have the movement required to keep it ticking. You may have more than one watch and due to 'rotation' of your timepieces, the others may stop. This is when a watch winder would be considered a great investment! At 1010 Boutique, we stock the UK's widest range of watch winders that range from entry level to high end. For such a flagship brand as Rolex we (and Rolex) recommend using the Masterbox by SwissKubik. The Masterbox is 100% made in Switzerland and is considered by most to be the finest watch winder available. You can read more about it here.

Common winding mistakes

Common mistakes during winding and setting process might include:

  • Not unscrewing the winding crown fully.
  • Setting the date between 9pm and 3am. This period is when the date wheel mechanism might be engaged and changing the date may cause damage.
  • Not screwing the winding crown back down fully - allowing water ingress.
